Another year for Canada, another flat for me

It really seems I can’t settle properly in this city as I wish. It’s been less than 2 months since I moved in my flat at the 30th floor and I am about to move again.

Let’s be honest: the view is fantastic, but my wallet seems to disagree with my eyes.
Vancouver is expensive and we already know that, my salary is not the one of a general manager (and you might have not known that but it is a sort of expected thing for a newcomer); hence my decision to please less my eyes with the view on the skyscrapers and more my bank account, moving to a cheaper place, but still in downtown.

As a coincidence, my move will happen on the 1st July, and this is going to create me problems, as it is Canada Day, the day of the year where Canadians try to affirm solemnly their identity, their being part of the maple leaf country. This is also why I have decided to turn temporarily red my blog, to live the spirit of my first Canada Day.
No matter how long I will take to clean my new room and place my stuff, I wanna hang around with some friends and take pictures to the city, the people and the events.
I still have to find what’s worthy a look (they say fireworks are very good) but I’ve just ferreted out this useful link making a search on the big G.

Finally, there will be also the Euro 2012 final. I confess I’m not usually involved in sport events, but when the Italian national team plays I follow the matches, swear and shout like supporters are supposed to do.
I don’t know if Italy will play the final (Germany will be a tough team to deal with), but if it will, well, my agenda on 1st July will be just full, and I hope to have the chance to wave an Italian flag like the unforgettable night I spent in Dublin on 9th July 2006.

Happy birthday Canada and come on Italy, make my celebrate twice!

Summer music: blend of sounds

I went out for a walk around when my attention got caught by the very deep sound of some kind of drum in Gastown. To much of my surprise I came across to a big crowd filling in the streets of the historical quarter of Vancouver, for the “Make Music Vancouver”. It’s a festival to celebrate the beginning of the summer; something that would make no sense in a sunny place like Italy, but that really remarks the importance of challenging the ever-lasting clouds that, especially this month, make the city very rainy.

I was surprised not only by the amount of people, but also by the festival itself: not a big stage, but several small kiosks, each one handing out music with live bands instead of food to a crowd hungry for fun and craving for one more dance.
It was an incredible blend of styles rather than a single style, gathering hippies, punks, simple tourists or simple onlookers, even a chap trying to resemble Elvis Presley, mixing smell of cigars and smell of joints, techno, jazz, rock, something vaguely sounding like ska and other undefined kinds of music; a fusion of everything in a city that mixes people and cultures from all over the world.

Thought of the moment

I'm in my room watching from the window the rainy weather clouding the towers of the city, wondering when June will be a proper sunny June, wondering when I will find what I'm looking for in Vancouver.

When... it's only a matter of time, but I feel I am in a hurry.
I have to run, and don't know the direction.
And today is just another ordinary day of haste.
